bullet2/10/2001   Research resources in France - submitted by Leland G. Shumway

Leland has identified important new resources that may help us in tracing our Shumway roots back to France.

According to early family tradition, Peter Shumway was born in France. Other traditions, not quite so strong, state he was a Huguenot. Did he migrate from the Deux-Sevres department of France in the 1600s? Do the Protestant Archives contain information about him?

bulletThere is a Calvinist Church in Niort (5 miles from St. Maixent) that has existed on a small scale since the 1600's...the URL is: www.eglise-reformee-ouest.com/Niort1.htm . They don't have any records on line, but have an address for the Protestant Archives for Deux-Sevres, and points of contact in the congregation.
bulletThe Deux-Sevres department of Archives is online, but no records are available yet from the net...they claim records back to the 11th century,
with gaps due to the "religious wars" and a fire in 1805. The URL:

bulletShumway Condominiums - Kirkland, Washington

bulletShumway Mansion B&B located in Kirkland, WA. The Mansion was built in 1909 on the shore of Lake Washington for several adult children of John Russell Shumway and Mary Clark Holland which moved from Belchertown, MA. The children which contributed to the building of the mansion and (most of whom) lived in it were Mary, Edward, Elizabeth, Emily, Hattie, Antionette and Carrie.

After Carrie, the last surviving member of her family and the owner of the mansion, died, the house was used as a rest home and later as a chiropractor's office before being sold to a developer and slated for demolition.

Richard and Salli Harris purchased the mansion (but not the property it was on) and moved it to a new location, where it has been restored to its original condition and is now used as a bed & breakfast and reception center, as it has been since 1985. The award-winning Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We welcome any of the Shumway family and descendents to visit the Mansion and enjoy its unique B&B environment, as well as a piece of the Shumway family history.
