SHUMWAY, Robert C.

Robert C. Shumway, 86, of Guernseytown Road, Watertown, died Wednesday,(August 13, 2008), at Waterbury Hospital. He was
the widower of Harriet (Melcher) Shumway. Bob was born in Waterbury on October 16, 1921, son of the late Carl and
Mary (Massurt) Shumway. He was raised in Waterbury, graduated from Crosby High School and had lived in Watertown for over
40 years. He served as a First Class Radio Man on PBY Flying boats in World War II for 3 1/2 years. After his discharge from the
Navy, he used the GI Bill to continue his education at Ohio University. It was there that he met and married Harriet Melcher. They
were married 54 1/2 years until Harriet's death in 2005. Bob had a degree in Business Journalism and worked on the
Ohio Fremont News Messenger, The Dayton Journal, The Oil City PA Derrick & Blizzard, The Harrisburg Patriot News, and
The Republican-American. He then spent 18 years covering the Scripts Howard Sales division in most of the northeast.
After retiring in 1993, he spent a great deal of his time doing good deeds with the Watertown Lions old LOFBC group. He was a
member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Thomaston. Bob leaves two sons, David R. Shumway, who is a PHD and tenured
professor at Carnegie Melon University, and his wife, Heather Arnet, of Pittsburg, and James A. Shumway, who is the
Information Technology Director for the Office of the State Comptroller, and his wife Sharon, of Glastonbury; a daughter,
Barbara S. Altamirano and her husband, Edwin, of Watertown; a sister, Alice Kilbourn of Bantam; five granddaughters,
Julie Altamirano, Rachel Altamirano, Amanda Altamirano; Nicole Shumway, and Danielle Shumway; a grandson, Travis Shumway.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Shumway.

Funeral services for Bob will be held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 505 South Main St., Thomaston.
Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Watertown. Friends may call at Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Watertown,
Friday evening 5-8 p.m. Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 505 South Main St.,
Thomaston 06787.
