FISH, Stanwood Shumway

Stanwood Shumway Fish, 102, of Thornton Way at Thornton Oaks, Brunswick, ME, died Saturday, (September 28, 2002) at his home.
He was born in Freeport, ME, September 25, 1900, the son of William Watson and Rosamond Margaret Stanwood Fish. Mr. Fish
received his A.B. Degree in 1922 from Bowdoin College where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Mr. Fish then
received his Master's Degree in Education in 1932 from Harvard School of Education and was elected to Phi Delta Kappa, an
honorary fraternity. He taught in Milton, MA and Quincy, MA schools. Mr. Fish became principal of Quincy of Adams and
Cranch Schools. He then moved to Hartford, where he served as principal of Noah Webster School, Burr Jr. High and then
Northwest-Jones Jr. High, retiring in 1960. Mr. Fish taught mathematics at Loomis School in Windsor, and at the University of Hartford.
In 1932 he married Helen Curtis and lived in Hartford, where their two children, Marilyn and Stanwood were born. She died
June 18, 2002. During the summer months, Mr. Fish served as one of the directors of Camp Wyanoke for Boys in Wolfeboro, NH.
In 1968, Mr. Fish moved to South Freeport, ME where he was a member of the United Church of Christ and served as a deacon and treasurer. Mr. Fish was also a member of the Men's Stock Club of South Freeport. In 1982 he moved to Brunswick and moved
to Thornton Oaks in 1998. Surviving is a son, Stanwood C. Fish and his wife Virginia of Brunswick, ME; a daughter,
Marilyn Fish Dunham and her husband Atwood of Freeport, ME; a brother, Chauncey L. Fish of Silver Spring, MD; four
grandchildren, Sandra Curtis Fish, Margaret Dunham Dempsey, Jonathan C. Dunham and Stanwood C. Fish, Jr.; and three
great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Daphne Fish Plummer and Margaret Fish Plummer. A funeral service will
be held on Monday, October 7, 11 a.m., at the South Freeport Church UCC, South Freeport Road, with the Rev. John Potter
officiating. Committal prayers will follow at 1:15 p.m., at the Grove Cemetery, Pleasant Hill Road, Freeport. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to the South Freeport Church UCC South Freeport, ME 04078 or to the Bowdoin College
Scholarship Fund, 4100 College Station Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St.,
Brunswick, ME.
