FITCHBURG - Lewis K. Shumway, 78, of 88 Intervale Road, a Navy veteran of World War II and retired machinist, died Monday
in HealthAlliance-Leominster Hospital, Leominster, after an illness.

His wife of 51 years, Iona M. (McLeod) Shumway, died in 1995. He leaves a son, L. Kenneth Shumway Jr. of Fitchburg; a daughter,
Karen Maki of Leominster; a sister, Virginia Lofquist of Fitchburg; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A son, John W. Shumway of Fitchburg, died in 1978. He was born in Fitchburg, son of Lewis E. and Bertha (Welterlen) Shumway, and attended Fitchburg schools. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a machinist mate in the Atlantic and the Pacific.

Mr. Shumway was a machinist at American Can for 44 years, retiring in 1983.

He attended St. Leo's Church and All Saints Chapel, both in Leominster. He was a member of Charles W. Moore Lodge of Masons; a member of the Nash Car Club of America; and he attended several reunions of the Destroyer Cronin crew. He also was a ham operator
and built his own radio station.

A funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 2 Mount Royal Ave., Marlboro, MA 01752; or to American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham,
MA 01701. Bosk Funeral Home, 85 Blossom St., is directing arrangements.
