SHUMWAY - WILMA JEANNE BROWN, 73, of Dundee, N.Y., died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at home. Mrs. Brown was born on
Sept. 11, 1923, in Dushore, Pa., the daughter of Durland Wilcox and Fannie Melissa Campbell Shumway. She married the late
Willard B. Brown in Towanda, on Sept. 6, 1940. He passed away on May 11 , 1996. She continued her education later in life.
She received her master's degree in three years from Elmira College at the age of 40, majoring in English, with a minor in French.
She became a high school English teacher having taught in Waverly Central; Honeoye Falls; Campbell Central; and finally
Dundee Central, where she retired in 1986. She may be remembered for a column she wrote for the Star Gazette newspaper titled
"Visit With Jeanne." She also taught dance at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Elmira, N.Y. During her retirement she owned and
operated "Billie Jeanne Dolls," selling and restoring vintage dolls.
She had lived in Dundee since 1968, and previously lived in Elmira. She attended the Dundee Baptist Church and was a founding
member of Beta Phi Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma International, Honorary Society for Women Educators. In 1986 she joined
Gu-Ya-No-Ga Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and served as chairman of several committees and
was regent from 1989 to 1992. She was a past member of the Dundee Order of the Eastern Star, and the Dundee Teacher Association.
Mrs. Brown is survived by two sons, Gary W. (Diana) Brown, of Dundee and Edward K. (Diane) Brown of Elmira; two daughters,
Linda "Josie Brown" (Jim) Murphy of Nashville, Tenn., and Rosalie Kendall of Horseheads; one brother, Durland K. (Sara) Shumway
of Towanda; two sisters, Jacqueline J. Jacobs of Niagara Falls and June "Pete" (Stanley) Mayes of Sun city, Ariz.; 14
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister Barbara J. Wilson, of Mesa, Ariz., in 1992.
