ONEONTA — George Richard Shumway, 74, of Oneonta, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his home.
He was born March 9, 1926, in Hartwick the son of Grant U. and Florence R. (Wright) Shumway. He married Madeline Shillington on May 2, 1948, in West Oneonta. George served in the United States Navy during WWII. He worked in the maintenance department at Homer Folks Hospital for 22 years. After the closing of the hospital, he worked in the maintenance department at the State University College at Oneonta for seven years. He also worked for the city of Oneonta for the past several years and was caretaker of the Swart-Wilcox House.

George was a longtime member of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, and was a co-founder of the Christian Service Brigade. He had also served as a trustee for the church. He was a dedicated faithful servant to his family and friends and will be greatly missed. George was an avid sportsman.

George is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Madeline Shumway of Oneonta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Keith Valk of Oneonta and Janis and Chris Murray of Eastport, N.Y.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Diane Shumway of Southampton and John and Janet Shumway of Hobson, Mont.; one brother and sister-in-law, Grant and Sharon Shumway of Oneonta; grandchildren, Kaleb and Julie Valk of Oneonta, Justin Valk of Oneonta, Erek and Meredith Shumway of Southampton, Wyatt and David Shumway of Hobson, Mont., Joshua Shumway, Ryan and Shelby Corwin and Dakota Murray of Eastport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was predeceased by a sister, Beatrice Daniels; and two brothers, Arnold and Maynard Shumway.

Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta. The Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Christian Service Brigade Camp Fund, c/o Wayne Wright, Main Street Baptist Church, 333 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, in loving memory of George Richard Shumway.
