Notes for John Rollin Shumway

Retired Lt. Col. John Rollin Shumway, 83, died of cancer Sept. 7 at Air Force Village West special care unit in Riverside. Services
were private.

Interment was in Riverside National Cemetery.

Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside handled arrangements.

Lt. Col. Shumway, who was born in Preston, Ore., lived in Riverside 10 years. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and retired
from the U.S. Air Force in 1966. He last worked in the comptroller department at the Pentagon.

Lt. Col. Shumway received a Distinguished Flying Cross, a Silver Star Medal, an Air Medal with 17 oak leaf clusters and
numerous commendation letters. He was a fighter pilot with the 379th Fighter Squadron during the European campaign.
He flew 158 missions during the World War II and the Korean War.

He and several other airmen authored text for use in the Military Air Force Penal Code in 1953 in Amarillo, Texas. They developed
a retraining program for airmen convicted of minor offenses intended to help them make a comeback to honorable service instead
of discharge. The program was featured in Saturday Evening Post magazine.

After his military retirement, he worked in Red Cross administrative offices in San Francisco.

He attended Idaho State University and received a master's degree in social services from Ohio State University while stationed
at Wright Field.

While attending Idaho State, he won the Golden Gloves championship in the national collegiate, 147-pound weight class in April 1937.
He started boxing at age 15 in Oregon and won various other Golden Gloves championships.

He enjoyed reading, following politics, sketching in charcoal and traveling.

Lt. Col. Shumway is survived by his wife, Faye of Riverside; a daughter, Lydin Shahan of El Cajon; two stepdaughters,
Sharon Sandlin of Indianapolis and Susan Ofuji of San Diego; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
