A memorial service for Hazel Grace Shumway of McMinnville will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the McMinnville United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Ross officiating. Private interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.
Mrs. Shumway died Dec. 2, 2001, in her home. She was 100. She was born April 13, 1901, in Vancouver, Wash., the daughter of
Ernest and Orpha May Seymoure Loy. She was educated in Portland and received a teaching certificate from Jefferson High
School. She was a teacher in Creston for two years before marrying.
She and Guy Shumway were married Sept. 7, 1922, in Payette, Idaho. She taught in Creston for a year after marrying. She
lived in Bend from 1924 to 1933. She and her husband then farmed near Sisters until 1939, when they moved to McMinnville.
The couple lived in a house on Lafayette Avenue, McMinnville, for more than 50 years.
She belonged to the McMinnville United Methodist Church, Knowles Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and the McMinnville
Current Events Club. She helped organize a home economics extension group in McMinnville in 1941. She loved quilting,
sewing, and hooking and braiding rugs. She learned to quilt when she was 68 and went on to win several quilting honors.
She loved to learn and had taken every class offered by the Extension Service.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Burnett of McMinnville; two sons, Dean Shumway of Reston, Va., and Donald Shumway
of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Berniece Rollins of Arnold, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers.
