MARY SHUMWAY (1926 - ) P
(Portage, Plover, Oshkosh, Madison, Wisconsin Dells,
Stevens Point)
Born in Portage, grew up in Wisconsin Dells and is currently an English professor at UW-Stevens Point. Her
poetry has appeared in a variety of journals including the Wisconsin Academy Review. Her books of poetry include
Practicing Vivaldi (Juniper Press) and Time & Other Birds (Konglomerati Press). She is also a musician who plays the
violin, trumpet and baritone horn.


Mary L. Shumway, 73, 2530 White Pine Drive, Plover, a noted poet and retired University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
professor, died Saturday morning, March 18, 2000, at St. Michael's Hospital.

Ms. Shumway was born Aug. 21, 1926, in Portage, a daughter of the late Oliver and Margaret (Tolleth) Shumway. She attended
schools in Wisconsin Dells and graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School. She obtained her bachelor of arts degree in
English from the University of Chicago in 1957 and her master's degree from San Francisco State College in 1965. In 1971 she
received her Ph.D. from the University of Denver in Colorado and in the spring of 1976 she graduated from Princeton University in post doctoral work. She was a professor of English at UW-SP for more than 26 years, retiring in 1991.

She has had various books and poems published and numerous articles printed in English journals. She received a UW-SP
excellence in teaching award based upon evaluations by students and colleagues. As a published poet, she was recognized
by the Academy of American Poets, the Society of the Arts, Religion and Contemporary Culture, the Council for Wisconsin Writers, and Midwest Publishers. She has been a Robert Frost Fellow at Bread Loaf and a fellow at the MacDowell Colony.

Survivors include one sister, Norma Marz, Wisconsin Dells; one sister-in-law, Corrine Shumway, Wisconsin Dells; nieces
and nephews.
