HARLEY D. SHUMWAY Of Hayward died peacefully at home on March 12, 2004 with his wife, daughters and grandchildren by his
side. A native of Turon, Kansas, Harley was born on a farm on January 27, 1920. He was a veteran of WW II, serving in
Newfoundland and North Africa.Following his discharge from the Army, he moved to California and began a career in
radio broadcasting. Later, he became a TV engineer working at KOVR in Stockton and ending his career after 28 years
at KTVU in Oakland. Harley enjoyed golf with his friends and especially his grandchildren.He loved outdoor activities,
hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, gardening and he was an award winning wine maker.A 41 year member of
United Church of Hayward, he spent countless hours maintaining the grounds and using his woodworking skills to beautify
the church. Harley was always generous with his time and talents. Loving son of the late Jesse and Lulu Shumway and
predeceased by his sister, Lois Fisher, he is survived by his loving wife of 53 years. Betty, his cherished daughters
Deborah Lang, Laurie Blue, Lesley Sims and son-in-law, Richard, and his adored grandchildren Lindsay and
Joshua Lang and Ben and Marea Blue. Harley is also survived by his brother, Trevlyn Detmer and nephews,
Leon and Darrell Shumway. Services will be held on Friday, March 26 at 7:30 pm at the Niles Congregational Church,
255 H St. in Niles (Fremont). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Pathways Hospice, 201 San Antonio Circle,
