Notes for Peter Shumway

PETER SHUMWAY, RETIRED NAVY AVIATOR, DIES
Peter Shumway, 74, of West Elizabeth Street, Skaneateles, died Tuesday, Oct 9, at his home after a long illness.

A native of Evanston, Ill., Mr. Shumway lived in Skaneateles since 1959. He retired in 1959 as commander after a 20-year
career as a Navy officer. Mr. Shumway was a veteran of World War II, serving as an aviator. He participated in the
Battle of Midway. Mr. Shumway was a 1939 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and received his master's degree
from the University of Michigan. He also attended Northwestern University.

Mr Shumway also was the owner of Pete's Locksmithy in Skaneateles.

Mr. Shumway was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and the Austin Park Development Committee. He was a former member
and division captain of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary. He served as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Surviving are his wife, the former Adele Wysard; four sons, Peter E of Athens Georgia, Phillip r. of Chandler,
Arizona, Bruce H. of Wilmington, Del., and Paul W. of York Harbor, Maine; sister Thyrza S. Elliott of Wilmet, Illinios;
11 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Burial at Lakeview Cemetery, Skaneateles.

Note: Peter and his sixth cousin, Dewitt Wood Shumway, graduated from the United States Naval Academy and both participated in
the Battle of Midway during WWII.
