Durland Karl Shumway, 78
Durland Karl Shumway, 78, of RR3, Towanda, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.
Born Dec. 15, 1924 in Dushore, Pa, he was the son of the late Durland Wilcox and Fannie Campbell Shumway.
Karl served in the Coast Guard during World War II as a signalman 3rd class and was a member of the American Legion.
He retired from the Colgate Palmolive Company in 1980. Karl enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Karl is survived by his wife, Sara Brown Shumway, his children, Durland and Carlyn Shumway of Bellefonte, Byron and
Gayle Shumway of Towanda, Peter and Patty Shumway of Monroeton, Steven and Linda Shumway of Derry, N.H. and
Michael Shumway of Roanoke, Virg.; his grandchildren Jack (Julie), Kristopher, Clayton, Amanda, Alicia, John, Matthew,
Callie and Annie Shumway and his great-grandchildren, Kylie Ayers, Jordan and Jack Shumway Jr. Also surviving are
his sisters, Jacqueline "Jac" Jacobs of Niagara Falls, N.Y. and June "Pete" and Stan Mayes of Sun City, Ariz., and a
brother-in-law, Ed Wilson of Mesa, Ariz., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by
his parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne "Billie" and Willard Brown, his sister Barbara "Bobbie" Wilson and
his brother-in-law, Thomas Jacob.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 1-3 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave.
Towanda, Pennsylvania
A graveside service will follow at the Mountain Lake Cemetery, Burlington Township, Pennsylvania, with
Pastor Kenneth Brown officiating. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to American Legion Post 42, 912 Main St.
