Bernice M. (Crossman) Shumway, 87, formerly of the Clark House, 22 Lessey St., died Saturday in a local care center. She was
a receptionist for Dr. Schoenberger until retiring in 1977. She was an 11-year employee of Southern New England Telephone in
New Haven. She was also a six-year employee of New England Telephone and had worked at the former Fotit Real Estate in Amherst.
A lifelong resident, she was a graduate of New Haven Commercial High School. She was a member of North Congregational Church and
a former member of Second Congregational Church of Amherst. She served as a volunteer at the Senior Center, Belchertown, where
she was instrumental in the Meals on Wheels Program, and she had been a Cub Scout leader. She was predeceased by her
husband, David K. Shumway. She leaves three sons, David K. Shumway Jr. of Newton, Earle F. of Pelham and William E. of
Corvallis, Ore.; a brother, Frank of Gardner, and three sisters, Evelyn Sanden and Fern Johnson, both of Gardner; seven grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at North Congregational Church, and a private burial will be
at a later date. Calling hours are Tuesday evening at Douglass Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to
North Congregational Church, Pine St., Amherst, 01002.
