A Boise teenager was killed Saturday night when she was ejected from a truck in a traffic accident on Blacks Creek Road.
Rachel Shumway, 17, died from injuries in the crash, according to Ada County Sheriff´s Office reports.
The driver of the truck, a 17-year-old Boise male, and a 17-year-old female passenger also were injured but were treated at a hospital
and released, according to reports. Their names were not released because they are juveniles, Lt. Scott Johnson said.
All three are Timberline High School students.
The driver was driving the vehicle southbound on Blacks Creek Road about 4.8 miles north of Interstate 84 at about 10:30 p.m.
Saturday and apparently took a turn in the road too fast and lost control, which resulted in the vehicle flipping twice, Johnson said.
Shumway, who was in the front passenger seat, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown out of the vehicle. She died at the
scene, according to reports.
Johnson said the teens were looking for a party in the area but couldn´t find it and were returning to Boise when the accident
occurred, Johnson said.
Several beer cans were found at the scene, Johnson said.
Investigators are awaiting results of a blood-alcohol test from the driver, but preliminary reports indicate he was sober and acting as
a designated driver, Johnson said.
Chantel Bunce, 18, a 2003 Timberline graduate, said it´s not unusual for kids to have keg parties in the Blacks Creek Road area because
it is remote and difficult for police vehicles without four-wheel drive to access.
Bunce said she was saddened to hear about Shumway´s death and the injuries of the others but was not surprised that an accident
had occurred.
"There are lots of parties up there because it´s away from the city and further out in the hills," she said. "It causes a lot of problems
for people who have to drive back down."
