Notes for John Reid Shumway

John R. Shumway

John Reid Shumway, 85, Gladstone, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at the
Woodbine Care Center in Gladstone.

Mr. Shumway was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Kansas City, Kan., to Jay and Anna
Shumway. He retired from the Wabash Railroad and ran his own traffic
consulting business in St. Joseph. He also taught interstate commerce law at the
University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. He had served as a deputy
sheriff in Taney County, Mo., was president of the Kansas City Traffic Club,
past master of the Forsythe Lodge and a standing member of the St. Joseph
Scottish Rite. He was a published writer of poetry and short stories. He was
preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Tessie S. Hicks.

His survivors include a daughter, Martha Harriet Maher; a brother, Earl Miller;
one sister, Ellen; five grandchildren, Maura, John, Faye, Nellie and Maggie; and
18 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King
Catholic Church in Kansas City, Kan. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m.
Saturday at the church. Online condolences may be left at

Suburban Chapel, Independence.
