Notes for Conrad Shumway

Conrad Shumway Sr., age 82, Farmer, Educator and retired Army Officer died Friday, April 14, 1978 at Fox Hospital, Oneonta,
after a brief illness.

He was born in New Brunswick, N.J. on April 25, 1895, the son of Dr. Edgar Shumway and Florence Snow. He attended
Manual Training High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was graduated from Amherst College at Amherst, Mass, in 1915.
He also attended Cornell and St. Lawrence Universities. After Cornell he managed the creamery for the Clark Estate which
is nothe Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., after that he was Department Manager for the Leslie Judge Company in
New York City. He served as a Justice of the Pease for Greig, N.Y. from 1927-1934. He was a teacher in New York State
for 21 years, and concurrently the Principle ot the Turin and Forest Port High Schools and the Manlius Military Academy.
He retired from the Army in 1953. He served as a 2nd Lt. of Infantry with A.E.F. in France during W.W.I .. From 1935
through 1942 he served as Army Officer in Charge of the CCC Camps. He served as Major with the Coast Aritllary from
1942 through 1945. On December 22, 1917 he was married to Etta Cobb, she died June 1, 1973. Since his retirement
Mr. Shumway has spent summers on his farm at Greig, N.Y. and winters with his daughter Florence. He was an avid
gardener and stamp collector, and since his retirement has traveled extensively. In 1974 he revisited Luxembourg, France
where he spent one winter during WWI.

He is survived by two daughters, Miss Florence Shumway, who is director of nursing in Fox Hospital, Oneonta, and another
daughter, Mrs Edward (Martha) Wegenaar of North Babalyon, N.Y.;one son Conrad Jr. of Star Route, Lowville. He is also
survived by 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. One brother Lowell Shumway of Bronxville, N.Y.

Interment at Beaches Bridge Cemetery, Greig, N.Y.
