David King Shumway, 86, of Clark House, 22 Lessey St., the proprietor of Shumway's Exterior & Interior Painting Co., died
Tuesday at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.
Born in this town, he was a graduate of Amherst Regional High School. He pitched for the high school baseball team, and
supported Amherst youth and high school sports programs for many years.
He was a Boy Scout leader, and a former member of Troop 503. A member of North Congregational Church in North Amherst,
he had been a deacon and choir director at the former Second Congregational Church.
He was a director of the Northampton Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartets,
and a member of the Western Square Dance Club of Chicopee.
He also played duplicate bridge with his late brother, and won many local tournaments in the 1930s.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, the former Bernice Marion Crossman; three sons, David King Jr. of Newton, Earl Frank of Pelham,
and William Ernest of Corvallis, Ore.; seven grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
A brother, Earl, predeceased him.
The funeral will be Saturday in North Congregational Church. Calling hours are Friday afternoon and evening at Douglass
Funeral Home.
