MILTON-FREEWATER -- Funeral services of the late Arthur R. Shumway of Route 1,
who died at a Walla Walla Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the
First Christian Church with the Rev. George Knox officiating. Interment will
follow at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.
A resident of this area most of his life, Shumway was born in Walla Walla Aug
24, 1912. He graduated from MacLoughlin Union High School, attended Whitman
College for two years and graduated from Oregon State College with a B.A. in
Chemistry.
Shumway was employed as a chemist for flour mills in Portland and Lewiston
before returning to Milton-Freewater in 1940 where he married Leona Gross Sept
3, 1940. He then took over the farming operation in Couse Creek which had been
in the Shumway family since it was homesteaded by his grandfather in 1871. He
also worked for the county extension service for a short time testing apples.
Long active in community affairs, Shumway was a member of the First Christian
Church, Milton-Lodge No. 96 AF&AM, Royal Arch Mason Chapter No. 23, Pendleton
Commandery No. 27 Knights Templar and was a charter member of BPOE 2146. He was
a member and past president of the Umatilla Cattlemen's association and the Farm
Bureau, was the original supervisor of the East Umatilla Soil and Water
Conservation district, served aas director for two terms of Pendleton Grain
Growers Association and was a member of the Oregon Wheat League, Shumway was on
the school board for District ? and District 31 for 25 years, was a member of
the 4-H Leaders Association and was a committeemand for the Boy Scouts.
He is survived by his wife, Leona, at the home; a son, Alva, at the home; two
daughters Judith, a student at the University of Oregon and Mrs. Fred (Linda)
Roberts of ?oraga, Calif.; his mother, Mrs. Della Shumway of Milton-Freewater; a
brother, Jamie L., Upland Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Ruth) Baldner of Cottage
Grove, Ore.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
