Birth Record: Vital Records New Braintree, Massachusetts to the Year 1850
In 1834, Samuel Shumway, who had been working in his father's shop, removed to New York City, where he became engaged in
the wholesale furniture trade. He returned to Brookfield four years later to marry a local woman named Jane Pritchard. 1838 was a
year in which James Clark made a weighty decision: it was then that he and his family left the community which had been home for
almost a quarter century, to join son, Samuel, in New York. James and Samuel were both listed at times as partners in the
furniture business, into the next year. That year would be one of great sadness for the Clark family, for on May 10, 1839, at the
age of fifty-five, Mary Clark died in New York City. James returned to Brookfield to bury his wife in a plot near their infant daughter.
