Shumway, Arthur Guy (1 Aug. 1891 – 5 March 1936)

Ill health and fear that he was a victim of tuberculosis were given as the reason
for leading Arthur Shumway, 44 years old, to kill himself with a shotgun Thursday
at the J. L. Kleckner farm east of the city, where Mr. Shumway was employed as manager.

Mr. Shumway returned from Granton about 6:45 p.m., Thursday and loaded the shotgun
after entering the house. It was said he had threatened suicide before and Mrs. Shumway
tried to get him to give up the weapon, but he pointed the gun at her whenever she went
near him. Becoming alarmed at his behavior Mrs. Shumway ran from the house and heard
a shot a moment later. She went to the home of a neighbor and called Dr. R. R. Rath of
Granton who pronounced Mr. Shumway dead when he arrived.

Artemas Guy Shumway, son of William and Charlotte Shumway, was born in the Town
of Pine Valley, Aug. 1, 1891, and died at his farm home in the Town of Grant Thursday
evening, March 5, 1936, aged 44 years.

His early life was spent in the Town of Pine Valley where he attended the Pine Valley School.

Most of his adult life has been spent in farming. He began on his father’s farm, then rented
the Reidel farm in the Town of Lynn, and for the last six years has lived on the Diederick farm
in the Town of Grant. In earlier years he was employed by the Neillsville Condensary and by
the Hauge Oil Company.

On April 21, 1918 he was married to Vera Lloyd at Neillsville, and to this union three children
were born, two daughters, Edna and Alice, both of them Neillsville high school students, and
one son, Victor, who is deceased.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters mentioned above, by two brothers, Lloyd of the
Town of Grant and William of Janesville, Wis., and by one sister, Eva, Mrs. Philetus McKenny
of Mission, S. D., and by many friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Lowe Funeral Home on Monday afternoon, March 9, at
2 o’clock the Rev. P. B. White officiating, and burial took place in the local cemetery.

**Additional notes:

This is my grandfather. He went by the names of Artemas or "Art"; not Arthur. Thank you for the edit.
