WILLIAM P. SHUMWAY.--His native place is Charleston, where in 1847 he married
Miss Mary Bacon. They have six children. His occupation is farming, and his farm
covers 200 acres. His father, Sleeman Shumway, was born in Massachusetts, and
came to Tioga county in 1806. He married Desdemona Wetmore, of Vermont, and
died in 1864, aged 67, leaving five sons. William P.'s grandfather, Peter Shumway,
was a Revolutionary soldier; came from Massachusetts to Tioga county in 1806;
located first in the Tioga Valley, and two years later took up 250 acres on what has
since been known as Shumway Hill, where he died in 1833

In the 1850 US Census, William Palmer Shumway (29), AKA Palmer Shumway in the census records,
and his wife, Mary Bacon (27), are living on a farm in Charleston, Tioga, Pennsylvania.
With them live their young daughter, Ellen Shumway (20) and infant son,
George Woodward Shumway (7/12). All the Shumways were born in Pennsylvania
Death of Mr W P Shumway
Mr William Palmer Shumway, aged nearly 84, died about 1 o'clock Monday morning at his home in Charleston, after an illness
of several months.
He was born in Charleston township on April 9th, 1823 and was a son of Sleeman Shumway and a grandson of Peter Shumway,
a solder in the Revolutionary War, who served in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment and who settled in Tioga County in 1805.
The deceased spent his life on the homestead farm and was one of Charlestown's most prominent and substanial citizens.
Hw was a Republican in politics and always took a live interest in public affairs, having filled the offices of treasurer
and supervisor of Charleston at different times.
On April 15, 1847. he married Mary Bacon, a daughter of Elmer and Mary Bacon, deceased, earky settlers of Charleston.
She was born November 3, 1828 and became the mother of seven children, viz: Ellen wife of Mr Elbert M Johnston, of
Charleston, recently of Wellsboro, Meers George and Arthur Shumway, of Wellsboro, Mr Peter Shumway of Charleston, recently
of Niagara Falls and formerly of Wellsboro; Mary, who died April 23, 1877; Clarence and Clara Rorapaugh, twins, the former
a resident of Corning and the latter of Greene, N Y. Their mother died September, 12, 1877.
On February 22, 1882, Mr Shumway married Lucretia Austin, a daughter of Nelson and Lydia Austin, of Charleston, and
a sister of Mrs M F Bailsy, of this borough She died several years ago.
Six years ago Mr Shumway married Mrs Harriet Francis, his boyhood sweetheart, who survives him.
Funeral services will be held today.
