LUTHER H. SHUMWAY, son of Solomon and Desdemona Shumway, born in Charleston in 1821,
is a grandson of one of the earliest settlers of Tioga County, Peter Shumwav, who came to the
county in 1806. Luther Shumway married Miss Clorinda Merrick, of Charleston, and they have
four children. He has been treasurer and supervisor. He owns a farm of 112 acres.

In the 1850 US Census, Luther Shumway (29) and Clarinda M. Merrick (21) are living on a
farm in Charleston. Tioga, Pennsylvania. Both Luther and Clarinda were born in Pennsylvania Also
on the farm lives Luther's father, Sleeman Shumway (53) and mother, Desdemona Wetmore (55).
Luther's real estate is valued at $400 and his father's at $3,500. Sleeman was born in Massachusetts and
his mother was born in Vt.
