He studied medicine with his father, Dr. Samuel Shumway, afterwards graduating from the College of Physicians and
Surgeons in New York City. He graduated with high honors in 1848. He practiced medicine about 10 years in Essex,
where many would have testified to his courageous long rides through drifting snow on the shores of Lake Champlain
to relieve their sufferings, when few would brave the weather. He went to Chicago in 1858 and built up a large practice
on the West side . He was esteemed by a large circle, both as physician and friend. Probably no other physician in the
city had a larger list of patients where no charge was ever made. He was one of the charter members of He speria
Lodge F. and A. M. A member of Prof. David Swing's congregation and of the Chicago Medical Society.
