The name Shu mway is French, from "chamois" a goatlike mountain animal.
The Shumways were Huguenots, Protestants who fled France for America
around 1670 to escape rel igious persecution. They were pioneer settlers
around Oxford and Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Several served as soldiers
and Revolutionary Ward Minutemen, and some were farmers.
Ellen was named for her grandmother, Ellen Blanchard G ould, who was
masrried first to Edward Samuel Shumway (who died at 35) and th en to
Nathaniel Bouton. Ellen never liked the name Ellen because she said al l
the nurses were named Ellen when she was growing up.
There are photos of E llen in her daughter's A Memory Book Ellen Stuart
Poole (2001).
Ellen and Jo hn's daughter, Ellen Stuart said in her book that her mother,
Ellen Bouton al ways seemed a little embarrassed on her wedding
anniversary.
