Sergeant David Shumway
Resided in Belchertown, Hampshire, Massachusetts

He was one of the "Minute Men" of the Revolutionary War, and was in the
battle of Bennington; From Mass. Records in Boston; "A muster roll for to
draw the billeting money for a company of the Militia under the command
of Capt. Elijah Dwight [among other names is] David Shumway Sergt. Bel to
and from camp 166 miles at 1penny per mile, 13 shillings, 10 pence."

Books ordered by State of Massachusetts to serve as official records of
Rev. War. 17 volumes. "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of
the Revolution" Volume 14, page 179.
SHUMWAY, David. Belchertown. Sergeant, in a company commanded by Lieut.
Aaron Phelps, Col. Elisha Porter's regt.; engaged July 9, 1777;
discharged Aug. 12, 1777; service 1 mo. 9 days, in Northern Department,
including travel (140 miles) home; also, Capt. Elijah Dwight's co.; pay
abstract for mileage to and from camp [year not given]; mileage for 166
miles allowed said Shumway.

number PP-9801. The identification number for David is #5 7407. In the notes
section he is listed as a Sergeant for MA and a source is listed as
RWGR-IZ.GED 18 Dec 1997.
