The Shumway Root Cellar

Notes for Sybil Shumway

Sybil Shumway Stewart passed away on Friday, March 23, 2001, after a brief illness.

Sybil was born on April 1, 1920, in Trenton, Utah. She was the youngest of four daughters born to Richard Franklin and Laura
Hobbs Shumway. She graduated from Logan High School in 1938 and obtained her B.S. degree from Utah State Agricultural
College, graduating in 1942 with a teaching certificate in home economics. She taught school in Franklin, Idaho, upon graduation
from college and was a substitute teacher for many years.

In 1943 she married Boyd Helaman Stewart who had courted her from their high school years. They were married in the
Logan Temple and honeymooned on their way to his Air Force duty station in Texas. His military career took them to
Alabama, Arizona, California and overseas in Japan, by which time they had seven children. The last three of their family of 10
arrived after they were released from active duty in the military and settled on a dairy farm in Weston, Idaho, in 1959. In 1975,
Boyd and Sybil moved to North Logan where they have resided since.

Sybil is survived by her husband of 58 years, Boyd; their 10 children, Boyd William (Tina), Weston, Idaho,
Kathryn S. Wood (Robert), Syracuse, Utah, Julie S. Wood, Logan, Utah, Ted (Lora), Farmington, Utah, Richard (Sue),
Weston, Idaho, Mary S. Tarbet (Brian), Kaysville, Utah, Michael (Bonnie), Logan, Utah, Christopher (Evie), Richmond, Utah,
Heather S. Lyman (Dale), Parker, Colo., Timothy Shawn (Marcia), Arlington, Va.; 44 grandchildren and approximately
18 great-grandchildren (give or take a couple, it changes pretty fast and frankly, we can't keep up and without mom, we probably
never will be able to keep an accurate, up-to-date number); sisters, Louise (Claude) Wennergren, Logan, Utah, Fredone (Dix) Jones,
San Jose, Calif., and numerous members of a loving, extended family.

Sybil was the Utah Mother of the Year in 1996 and honored by the Women's Center of Utah State University with the Outstanding
Women Over 65 Award. She served her church in various positions throughout her life, in every organization and in every position
from nursery leader to Relief Society president, always serving with complete dedication. She was active in Republican Party
positions, serving as a delegate to the Republican State Convention and in the campaigns of Congressman Jim Hansen,
Senator Orrin Hatch and Governors Norm Bangerter and Mike Leavitt. She supported her husband when he served as mayor of
North Logan from 1986 to 1990. She and Boyd served as missionaries to the Texas-Houston East Mission from 1991 to 1992 and
most recently as officiators at the Logan Temple.

Sybil's greatest source of joy was serving her family and others. Her example will be felt widely for generations.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday in the North Logan Stake Center, 2750 N. 800 East, North Logan. A viewing will be
held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Allen-Cranney Mortuary, 420 E. 1800 North, North Logan, Utah. Friends may call from 10 until
11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the stake center. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
