DIED-SHUMWAY- At her home in Lyons, Friday morning, Aug 19, 1898, Martha, wife of J. Shumway, aged
68 years. [sic-66 yrs]
When mother Shumway, as she was familiarily known, passed away, the spirit of one of the
noblest and purest souled women and devoted christian workers winged its flight to the
glorious realms of immortality- to a purer and better world where sorrow and pain are known
no more, and the soul lives on in joy and happiness throughout eternity.
What a glorious and sacred memory she leaves behind her, to be hallowed and cherished for
many years to come, and which should be a guiding light to the faltering ones, to aid them in
endeavoring to live a life of righteousness and usefulness.
The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, Sunday at 11 AM. Aug 21,
conducted by Rev T.C. Webster and Rev J.M. Bothwell. The church was beautifully decorated
with the choicest flowers, the loving tributes of many sorrowing friends.
The choir, consisting of Miss Ada Newell, Mrs.James Stiles, W.G. Davis and J.B. Lyon, sang
some beautiful and appropriate songs and Rev T.C. Webster sang a touching solo
entitled "Beckoning Hands." For want of space we are unable to give the ministers
earnest, pathetic words of consolation to the bereaved ones.
One of the largest funeral processions ever seen here followed the remains to the Lyons
cemetery, the pall bearers being:
Joel S. Yeaton, W.G. Waite, Franklin Everett, Waldo H. Lyon, J.D. Hart, and W.H. Going.
All the children and grandchildren were present at the funeral as follows: Mr. & Mrs.
William Cass and three children- Arthur, Sadie, and Lottie; H.P. Shumway of Wakefield,
wife, and three [sic] children - Howard, Percy, Earl and Ruth; Mr. & Mrs. Fremont Everett and
two children- Hallie [Harold] and Clara; Edmund Shumway and three children of Denver,
Colo- Ralph, Winnie and Emma; C.O. Shumway, wife and five children- Dean, Irma, Harold,
Nona, and Victor; L.G. Shumway, wife and three children - Vernon, Jessie and Jeremiah;
Leroy M. Shumway of Wakefield. Their son Arthur died a number of years ago.
The deceased was born July 28, 1832 at Burrellville, Rhode Island and was married to
J. Shumway July 25 1852, at Webster, Massachusetts; her maiden name was Mary M. Paine. She
went with her husband to Portland Prarie, Houston county, Minn, in 1854, and moved to
Lyons Neb, in the fall of 1881.
While living in Minnesota her pioneer home was also the home of ministers of the gospel.
They knew they were welcome and felt more at home there with this good christian family
than any where else in all the neighborhood. Mrs.Shumway became a member of
the M.E. church in 1852, and even before that, while a young girl, she took an active part
in all religious work. A glorious exemplary life is this! Over fifty years in the cause of
christianity! Fifty years in the battle for the good, the true and the beautiful, surely
deserves the richest rewards and rarest blessings within the gifts of Almighty God, in
that far away land of the soul, where mother Shumway is waiting to greet the loved
ones of earth.
She was born in Pascoag, a suburb of Burrillville.
