With his brother Nehemiah went to Ohio in 1818. On one of the trips Jeremiah selected a site in what is now known as
Glenville, where he bought 600 acres of land, moving his family there in 1819.
In the 1850 US Census, Jeremiah Shumway (72) and his wife, Helen Simmons (56) were residing
on a farm in East Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Jeremah was born in Massachusetts and his wife
was born in Vt. Alvira Shumway (26), Edwin J. Shumway (17), Mary Shumway (14),
Luanna P. Shumway (10) live at home and were born in Ohio. A granddaugher, Jane Valona Brainard,
AKA Valona in the census records, (6) was living with her grandparents in June of 1850.
