Notes for Jeremiah Shumway

He enlisted in the army as a youth and rose to the rank of Colonel. An extract from the
Mass. rtecords at Boston: A List of names that went from Dudley, MA into the army in
the year 1780 Marched 26 June and dismissed 10th Dec. 1780- Jeremiah Shumway.
He went to reinforce the Continental army agreeable to resolve of the General Court.

In another record, he is described "Age 18-5 ft 5 in- dark- Farmer"
At the close of the Revolution he associated himself with Col. Benjamin Freeman in
the purchase of a farm in Sturbridge, where later he married the only daughter of
Col. Freeman. They also conducted the only hotel and store in town at that time.
His name appears as one of the petitioners to incorporate a new parish in the southeast
part of Sturbridge and including parts of Dudley and Charlton.
