In the 1850 Census Henry is listed as living on his father's farm on Spring Hill.
Bradford County, Pennsylvania He is the eldest child, age 19, still living on the farm.
The other two sons living at home are Harrison, 14 years, and William, 10 years old.
In the 1880 US Census, Henry L Shumway (49) and his wife, Sally Sabrina Smith (47)
are living in Auburn, Shawnee, Kansas. They have two sons living with them on their
farm, Cyrus H. Shumway (18) and Herbert H. Shumway (3). Also a brother, William Shumway (39)
resides on the farm. The two brothers, Henry and William were born in Pennsylvania.
Henry's wife was born in New York. The boys, Cyrus H. Shumway and Herbert H. Shumway
were born in Kansas,

Henry was a soldier in the Civil War in Co. B, 2d Battalion Missouri Militia.
He was discharged for disability, but later reenlisted in a Kansas Regt. in
which he was 1st Lieut., declining a cataincy offered him. This Regt. was
nearly annihilated in the battle of the Big Blue, only seven members surviving.
