Enlisted in the Union Army, member of Co. C 10th NY Heavy Artillery. Was in Sheridan's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley and was wounded in the siege of Petersburg, 4-2-1865 and was in the hospital until 6-17-1865.

In the US Census of 1850, John and his wife Helen are living on a farm in Theresa, Jefferson, New York.
They have a daughter Corasanda(3) not 1 living with them but no Isabel(3).
