At twenty years of age, Alvah went with his brother Joel to Antwerp NY, where he
learned the art of dyeing cloth, though he continued to work at farming. His father
sent for him to return, which he did and remained with his father in his declining years.
On the death of his father he inherited the farm, but afterwards sold it and returned to
Antwerp. Made the trip with an ox-team and took twenty days. There he bought a farm
adjoining his father-in-laws and was a prosperous farmer

In the 1850 US Census, Alvah is 54 and living on a farm in Antwerp, Jefferson, New York.
His wife, Olive, 48 is living on the farm valued at $1,500. Also living with their parents are
two sons Alanson(23) $600 and Dempster(3) and sisters, Marilla(13), Maria S.(8)
aka Semantha and Theresa(3)
His eldest daughter, Almeda Shumway (26) and her husband, Aaron Kitts (33) live on
a farm adjoining Alvah Shumway's farm. Almeda was born in VT and her husband in NY.
The farm is valued at $600. They have two girls Ambrose Kitts (3) and Celia Kitts (6/12),
