The Shumway Root Cellar

Notes for Allen Shumway

During his early life, he learned the trade of a ship carpenter; through this,
he doubtless imbibed a love for the sea, as he afterward became a captain
of a whaling vessel, on which he made a number of voyages; later, he became
engaged in the general trading business, and made voyages to South America,
West Indies, Australia and other import points, each time sailing from the port
of Boston; after some years, he retired from a sea-faring life, and entered into
the building business in New York City; thence he removed to Richmondville,
Schoharie County, NY, where he continued the same business; he built shops
and mills, in which he also conducted a manufacturing business successfully:
while erecting or repairing the dam to one of his mills, he contracted a severe
cold which resulted in a chronic disease in his lower limbs, so that he lost the
entire use of them; he remained in this helpless condition until his death, which
occurred in Milford (Otsego County), NY.
