The Shumway Root Cellar

Notes for Rufus Shumway

Rufus Shumway and Dolly Pierce had no children. After Rufus died in Otsego County,
New York, his widow moved to Massachusetts. Rufus was a miller by trade.

Basic information taken from the book "Genealogy of the Shumway Family in
the United States of America." Compiled by Asahel Adams Shumway. Volume 1.

Around 1815, Rufus removed from Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Decatur, New York.
He bought land from his brother Silas in Decatur, Otsego, New York. In the 1820 census
he is listed with Allen and his younger brother Jeremiah D. Shumway as living in Cobleskill, New York.
During that time Richmondville was part of Cobleskill and it appears all four brothers
lived near each other. By 1830 Rufus was listed in the census as living in Decatur, Otsego,
New York.
