Lanark Cemetery, Lanark, Ill - Alvaro Shumway Family

As time passes, David Shumway Bardue takes on the posture of his great grand dad’s headstone.

In the Lanark Cemetery, Lanark, Illinois, this stump shaped headstone of Alvaro Shumway is not only one of the tallest in the well tended old graveyard, but during its long tenure, It’s taken on a definite list toward the southwest.

Beneath this cast cement obelisque are the remains of:

Alvaro Shumway, born in Kishwaukee, Winnebago County, Illinois in 1838, his wife,

Emily (Manning) born in Delaware County, Ohio, in 1842 and three of their five daughters, all born in Lanark:

            Mary Clair 1862 – 1869

            Minnie 1864 – 1866

            Hattie 1872 – 1883

The composition of this unusual type of stone seems to allow it to weather as well as granite and better than marble so there’s no need to rush to see it.
