Lillie Irene Shumway was the first of seven children born to David Gifford and Pauline Vanderhoof Shumway. Lillie was born on December 14, 1853 in New York and died March 2, 1898. In the A.A. Lillie married Dr. Albert Barton McLeran on October 16, 1870 in New York. Albert was born on January 22, 1842 in New York, and died September 6, 1901 and is buried next to his wife Lillie in Hilo/ New Liberty Cemetery, Bradley County, Hilo, Arkansas. There is some confusion as to Albert's national heritage: On Alvord McLeran, Albert's brother, death certificate it says he was born in Scotland but other records suggest England. Albert Barton's father Peter McLeran came to USA before 1842 from either England or Scottland and married before 1843 to Nancy Gillispie.

Albert and Lillie moved from Michigan to Missouri some time between 1873 and 1876. In 1880 Albert and Lillie were living in Richmond, Ray County, Missouri when the census was taken, and they had property at Haller. This may have been a store, since the transaction lists ten "showcases" as being included in the bill of sale. Albert was registered to practice medicine in River Township, Gravelridge, Arkansas on June 26, 1886, and a land transaction on June 25, 1887 lists their residence as Bradley County, Arkansas. Although it is not known precisely when they had come to Arkansas, they were to live out their lives there.

Lillie's brothers William and Arthur joined them in Warren County during the 1890's, but by 1900 William had returned to Michigan. No death certificate is known to exist for either Albert or Lillie and their cause of death is not known.
