SEVENTH REGT. N.Y.S.M. 1861. 

 

Mounted Albumen Photograph. Overall: 7 3/4 x 11 inches. Albumen Photograph: 4 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches. Showing Col. Shumway in a standing view, wearing grey 7th New York Vols. jacket, with large 'excelsior' buttons. Also, fancy dress epaulettes. Leather belt with New York old English script buckle. Holds a foot officer's sword. 

 

The 7th New York was nicknamed the 'Steuben Guard' or 'Steuben Regiment', and the men were recruited from the New York City and Brooklyn areas. They were mustered in on April 23, 1861 and mustered out on May 8th, 1863.

 

HENRY COTTON SHUMWAY was born in 1807 and died in New York in 1884. He studied at the Academy of Design in New York during 1828-29, and was one of the early members of the academy, being selected as an associate in 1831 and academician the following year. For many years he followed his profession as a miniature-painter successfully in New York and other cities. Among the famous who sat for his portraits were Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and Prince Napoleon (later Napoleon III).

 

 He was for many years an officer in the New York 7th Regiment, and a member of the veteran corps.
