Thank you for your response to my query about Herbert Shumway. I am glad to have some information about the family for our history project. The family had a homestead in section 8 of Balsam Township here in northern Minnesota. They had a house on one of the lakes in what is now a state park, probably from around 1900 to 1910. When they sold the property and moved they gave one of the neighbors a "spindle" rocking chair. The family still has the chair. Because they were one of the first people to homestead here, the lake has been named "Lake Shumway" in their honor. The campground in the Savanna Portage State Park is located on Lake Shumway quite near the original Shumway homestead. Your information is much appreciated and very useful to me, thank you again.
