Herbert Royal Shumway was the son of Porter Shumway. Herbert was born on Mar. 29, 1840, in Martinsburgh, NY; married Celia Adelaide McCarthy Jan 20, 1864; she was born Sept. 27, 1842; resided in Bluffton, Iowa ; he was a vetern of the Civil War, having enlisted in 1862 in the 5th NY Artillery, Co. I, of which he was 1st Sergeant; was honorably discharged June 24, 1865, with impaired health ; was in business in Minneapolis until he retired in 1892 and continued to live there. Appears to have to sons, Herbert F. & Carlton Henry who were employed by the railroads in early 1900's.
