I have never seen the origin with my own eyes but I suspect that the Gould surname came from one of the lesser known Shumway genealogy books. There were two of these that I know of and I have had a discussion with the owner of one of them. There was a Shumway family org. in Arizonia that published one of them. From my understanding that book at least, concentrates on the Utah Pioneer Branch of the Shumways and it presents Charles (I think, I do not have my copy of Ashaels book to check it with close by) the Pioneer that drove the 1st waggon train to Winter Quarters as the progenatior of the Shumway family. It does mention in passing the existance of Ashael's book.

NO ONE HAS EVER documented a Gould as Peters wife. In his will Peter does give us a hint by giving her name as Frances R. which I rarely see on a family group sheet - but it is at least a little bit better than nothing.
